Circuit Magistrate Municipal Courts
Circuit Court is not the first stop for every case. Magistrate Court handles many smaller civil, criminal, traffic, warrant, and bond matters. Family Court records may be partly public in divorce matters, but juvenile, adoption, and protected child information have stricter limits.
Chester Juvenile Adoption Limits
South Carolina law keeps juvenile court records confidential under S.C. Code Section 63-19-2010. Family Court generally handles minors under 18 alleged to violate state or municipal law, with exceptions for some traffic, fish, and game matters and transfer rules for serious cases. Adoption records are confidential from filing and sealed after final decree under S.C. Code Section 63-9-780.

Chester County is in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Rock Hill Division, for federal matters. Federal district and bankruptcy records are searched through federal systems, not the Chester Public Index.

Chester County Lower Courts
Chester County Magistrate Court is at the Law Enforcement Center, 2740 Dawson Drive. It handles summary matters, lower civil claims, traffic citations, bond, preliminary hearings, and warrant functions. Bond Court is daily at 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM. Magistrate Court documents filed in that court are generally public records at the court where filed, and many Magistrate case records are available through public access case search.
Chester Municipal Court also uses 2740 Dawson Drive and meets Mondays at 5 PM. Fort Lawn Municipal Court is listed by the Judicial Branch, and Great Falls Municipal Court handles traffic violations, speeding citations, town ordinance violations, minor misdemeanors, code enforcement, animal control, and parking matters. Great Falls warns that failure to appear may result in a bench warrant and driver's license suspension.
